Tutto ’l dì piango; e poi la notte, quando

suddenly a night wind flaps the canvas
& elevates the smells of the fairground
through temporary gaps in the racket
before the mingled musics wash back in

with Roy Orbison Girls Aloud Dire Straits
well-oiled waltzers & cracked generators
something almost edible yet fetid
swoops past the nostrils & rings distant bells

my catalogue of over-reactions
slightly foxed & increasingly unbound
my contents open to the elements

the big wheel shovels us out of the smoke
up into a clarity of starlight
then back towards the rubbish bins & stone
